Frequently Asked Workout Questions – Why Meal Prep Delivery Works

I’ve been asked by many customers, “What should I eat before I work out and how long should I wait before I work out after eating?”  These two questions are really important and there are definitely different opinions on what is best.  So, I asked my personal trainer, who has over 25 years of training experience.  Ideally, he wants me to have a balanced meal with at least 30 grams of protein and a complex carbohydrate such as oatmeal or cream of rice.  He prefers egg whites for lean protein and he doesn’t seem to like it when I select a bagel for my carb, although I have to admit that is my favorite breakfast.  I really wonder how much of a difference it makes choosing a bagel for oatmeal, that is if the calories are equal.  I guess that is an answer I need to find out.

He also instructs me to make sure I eat at least 1.5 -2 hours before I work out.  He doesn’t want me digesting food when I’m about to start squats and he is right, those workouts can be very tough.

Finally, a third question, not addressed is “what is the best meal to eat after a workout and when?”  For weight training, most of us have learned to eat within 30 minutes of working out and to try and consume another balanced meal.  It is during this time when your body needs to replenish to maintain or build the muscle you’ve been working hard on at the gym, otherwise, you may end up tearing done hard earned muscle to fuel your calorie needs for other normal body functions.  Try not to wait hours after your workout to eat, but if you don’t have your own meal prep available, that’s where we can help.

*if you don’t have Smart Meals or your own post workout meal at least try and drink a post-workout recovery drink that contains all the branch chain amino acids, this will buy you some time until you can eat a well-balanced protein/carb meal.

An easy Pre-workout meal would be a burrito (eating 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours prior) or a small combo meal, but it also depends on the person.
